Opening Reception: Saturday, June 4, 2022, 1-4 PM
Barry Whistler Gallery is pleased to present Learning to Draw opening June 4, 2022, with an opening reception from 1-4 pm. This exhibition will feature over 40 artists who explore a wide range of approaches and materials in their practice of drawing.
Most of us became familiar with drawing as children. Drawing is often the first step towards communication and storytelling. For artists, drawings can be the beginning of a larger idea.
Artist Bob Wilhite uses drawing to bring his concepts to life. Whether a sketch of a chair, flatware or a sculpture, he starts with the pencil and a piece of paper.
Artist Matt Kleberg uses his small scale drawings of architectural shapes as studies for his large scale paintings. The drawings made with oil sticks hold an equal amount of power as they do in large scale oil on canvas.
Claes Oldenberg’s loose and quick sketches are familiar in content and hand. His style is immediately recognizable even as simple as a cup of coffee and a donut.
Artist Peter Ligon visits old Dallas haunts and draws en plein aire. With ease he documents what is and what was.The viewer can follow his line with their eye and it may trigger memories.
Abstract artist Toni LaSalle’s drawings from 1955 are a modern look at her surroundings. LaSalle studied with the masters, including Hans Hoffman, and she later taught at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas from 1931-1972. Her line is distinctly her own.
Recognizing the daily enrichment drawings bring to our lives is often cited by scholars and art critics. Drawings can be relatable and also a precious abstract mystery. A powerful drawing has the ability to spark the imagination and the viewer is entitled to their own narration.
The late distinguished art historian William B. Jordan and his husband, Robert Dean Brownlee, whose collection of drawings was bequeathed to the Dallas Museum of Art and the drawings of three Houston collectors that make up the impressive Drawing Center at the Menil in Houston influenced gallerist Barry Whistler’s idea behind curating this extensive group exhibition.Whistler brings to the exhibition his deep love and understanding of the medium and his own personal passion for drawing and the artists behind them.
LEARNING TO DRAW opens Saturday, June 4, 2022 with an open house from 1 - 4 PM.
